13th International Special Economic Zone Investment Summit
On December 4, 2019, Rohit Kapur, Managing Director of Dezan Shira & Associates India Offices, presented a comparison of Indian and Chinese Special Economic Zones (SEZs) at the 13th International Special Economic Zone Investment Summit organized by ASSOCHAM.
Special Economic Zones in China
Rohit started the presentation by sharing a brief history of SEZs and how China brought them into the spotlight in the 1980s. A combination of favorable policies and optimal factors of production in Chinese SEZs resulted in unparalleled growth rates and immediate success stories.
One of the reasons why China became a global manufacturing powerhouse was because of its meticulously implemented SEZ policy. China attracted massive amounts of FDI year after year and became one of the top exporting countries of the world.
Several points were put forward by Rohit to explain what China did differently to achieve such success. He also shared a brief note on different economic incentives which were given to the investors to attract FDI in China.
Comparison of Chinese and Indian SEZs
Rohit gave an overview of India’s SEZ policy and compared Chinese and Indian SEZs on various parameters including size of SEZs, location, infrastructure, labor laws, and tax incentives.
Towards the end of the presentation, Rohit highlighted common concerns with India’s existing SEZ policy and why there is a need for its overhaul.
We would like to thank ASSOCHAM for organizing the 13th International Special Economic Zone Investment Summit and inviting us to participate as a panelist. Rohit’s presentation received positive feedback from the audience members which was made up of industry experts, policy makers and corporate houses.
