Our Shanghai Business Marks its 25th Anniversary and Plans its Next Chapter in the City

Dezan Shira & Associates’ Shanghai team is excited to announce their relocation to a new office in the city center on June 28. With 25 years of on-the-ground experience in Shanghai and over 30 years of providing multi-disciplinary professional services for clients in the pan-Asia region, this move marks an important milestone for us. 

The trust and support of our clients have allowed us to expand beyond our current office space and into a truly exciting and inspiring workspace for the future. Extensive planning has gone into this relocation effort to ensure uninterrupted service and the best possible experience for all clients during this transition. 

Standing at this remarkable point, we would like to take a moment to walk you through the history of our Shanghai office from the very beginning. 

25 years in a nutshell 

It all began in 1994 when the firm changed its name to “Dezan Shira & Associates” from the original name “Dezan Shira Business Management Services”, and established its first office in Shanghai, China’s economic hub. 

In 2006, the Shanghai office staff posed in front of the office building, representing a team fluent in English, Mandarin, various local Chinese dialects, and five European languages. This standard of language proficiency extends across all our eight offices in China.

In 2009, after 15 years of dedicated support to our esteemed clients and partners in Shanghai and East China region, we relocated to a new office in the center of Shanghai’s business area to facilitate our ever-growing team. At the opening ceremony, our equity partners including Chris Devonshire-Ellis, Alberto Vettoretti, and Sabrina Zhang, celebrated together with the Shanghai team, enjoying a traditional Chinese Lion Dance performance. This new office became a historic landmark, serving our team and clients for the upcoming 14 years. 

As a member of the Leading Edge Alliance (LEA), a prominent global network of international accountants and auditors, Dezan Shira & Associates has garnered numerous accolades. In 2016, we proudly hosted LEA’s annual meeting in Shanghai, marking the first time this event was held in Asia. Over 400 attendees, including partners and senior managers from around the world, participated in this momentous occasion. 

On November 10th, 2017, we celebrated Dezan Shira & Associates’ 25th anniversary of doing business in China with celebratory events and a gala dinner being held in Shanghai. More than 150 clients, partners, employees, and alumni joined this event, sharing their stories with us. From our humble beginnings in Shenzhen, China, our practice has expanded to encompass 30 offices across China, ASEAN, India, and the West. 

In addition to our extensive expertise in supporting business expansion and operational needs in Asia, we take great pleasure in offering our knowledge to facilitate your decision-making process and assist the younger generation in understanding the broader economic landscape from mid-2010. Our dedicated team in Shanghai frequently hosts a diverse range of events at our office, inviting chambers and consulates, business organizations, delegations, and student groups to foster meaningful communication and engaging discussions. 

Founded in 1999, including investment news about China, Hong Kong SAR, India, and the ASEAN nations, Asia Briefing has won numerous awards, and is regularly praised for our detailed, innovative, and influential content. First issues published in the same year is our China Briefing Magazine, which over the next decades, distribution becomes national with circulation reaching 25,000 copies a month. In 2019, Shanghai team celebrated the 20-year-establishment of Asia Briefing and China Briefing, anticipating a future with solid foundation and holding great ambition to facilitate our readers with essential and cutting-edge business insights in following decades. 

Due to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 situation, we had postponed the celebratory ceremony for our 30th Anniversary of doing business in Asia, originally scheduled for 2022. On May 17th, 2023, we gathered in Shanghai to commemorate this milestone, reaffirming our commitment to improving services for investors seeking to expand their businesses in China. We remain grateful for the support of our clients, partners, and team members throughout our 30-year journey and look forward to continued growth and success together.
