Ines Liu Presents at the Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair on China’s ‘Silver Economy’, to be Worth 30 Trillion Yuan (US$4.2 Trillion) in the Next Decade

On April 29, 2024, during the Gifts & Premium Fair in Hong Kong, hosted by HKTDC, Ines Liu, Senior Manager of International Business Advisory at Dezan Shira & Associates, participated and delivered presentations as part of a series of seminars offering valuable insights into consumer lifestyles and the current state of the senior lifestyle retail market across various regions.

China’s elderly population presents a compelling investment opportunity. According to figures from a government think-tank earlier this year, China unveiled a plan for a “silver economy,” estimated to reach 30 trillion yuan (US$4.2 trillion) within the next decade—constituting 10 percent of China’s overall total by 2035.

The Fair concluded as a great success, showcasing cultural and creative products that received positive feedback from buyers. Additionally, a series of seminars were organized, focusing on sunrise industries that offer increased business opportunities, such as the senior lifestyle retail market. Ines warmly expressed her thoughts following the event, saying “I am grateful for the opportunity to speak at the Fair. It was a rewarding experience collaborating with HKTDC and exchanging insights on the development of the Silver Economy, a prevailing trend in China and the Asia-Pacific region, with industry professionals.”

Expanding on her thoughts, Ines added, “The growing ‘silver generation’ in China presents a whole new set of distinct purchasing behaviors for brands to leverage. The diverse, differentiated, and personalized needs of the elderly are increasingly pronounced and pressing, yet remain largely unmet, offering significant opportunities for development.”
